About the Expert
Hi I'm Ashlie Johnson, celebrity manicurist, and today I'm going to give you some tips on how to get your nail polish to stay on longer. When working with my celebrity clients the question I find most asked is how can I get my nail polish to stay on longer. I personally think it's all about the base coat and how the nail is prepped. So the product I'm going to choose today is Essie's First Base base coat. It has an adhesive quality to it so that it really helps the polish stick to the nail plate. A really important part to getting your nail polish to last as long as it possibly can is to really make sure that you prep the nail plate to make sure that there's no oil residue at all because if there is, then your polish is going to bubble and peel off a lot faster. My favorite thing to use is a little gauze pad. It doesn't leave any lint like cotton does so it won't mess up your polish later and I'm just going to use a little bit of acetone or non-acetone polish, whatever you have around to just really clean the nail well. You want to make sure that you go along the cuticle and down the sides because that's where the oil likes to hide usually and that's step one. So now we're ready to go ahead and apply our adhesive base coat. This base coat is really interesting because when it dries it actually has a little bit of a tacky feeling almost like a sticky tape and it really helps the polish stick to the natural nail bed. So we're just going to apply that evenly to all ten nails and there we go, our base coat. Okay, now we're going to move on to our color coat. I chose this beautiful summery orange. It's going to look beautiful on Jennie's golden skin tone. You want to apply this the same way you did your base coat, a few even swipes distributing the color as evenly as possible and a great insider trick is to take a little swipe on the edge here at the end of the nail. This creates a little barrier and protector and kind of seals the polish together. And after all ten nails are painted, that's usually enough time that you can go ahead and start right on to your second color coat. And now on to our top coat. The top coat is going to help seal all the layers together, create a beautiful shine and really protect those color coats. The best way not to get any air bubbles is to roll your polish or shake it really gently. Don't shake it too much because that distributes the air through the polish and creates the little bubbles. Also if your polish is too old and becomes thick it traps the air in. So another great insider tip that I have for you is to apply a refreshing top coat every other day after your manicure and it will really prolong the life. And that's how you can get our nail polish to last longer. I'm Ashlie Johnson. Thanks for watching.
