Cycle 13 Episode 8 Behind-the-Scenes Interview
Valente Frazier

tyra.com: What’s your job?
VF: Host Makeup Artist
tyra.com: What do you do?
VF: I put makeup on Tyra. I have the easiest job because hair is complicated, Yaniece (the costume designer) has to shop and make sure things fit right. I just have to put makeup on and it’s easy since I know what I’m doing but also since she’s so beautiful she makes it even easier. I’ve done some hard faces before. This cycle we’re doing a lighter, fresher look that’s not so dramatic.
tyra.com: How long have you been working for America’s Next Top Model?
VF: Since 2003. I do both the talk show and Top Model.
tyra.com: How did you get started?
VF: It wasn’t my intention to be a makeup artist. I studied art in college, with an emphasis on painting at Norfolk State University. I worked at a department store makeup counter and I used to play around with my friends. The makeup counter was great training and a great way to learn from your mistakes. Then I moved to New York and worked for a major makeup line on 5th Avenue and started assisting a big makeup artist in the business. While I was assisting I met Jay Manuel, who started out as a makeup artist. He actually used to do Tyra’s makeup on Top Model before he became a bigger part of the show.
tyra.com: What’s the most fun part of your job?
VF: I love the finished result and the creative process. I also love the travel. I’ve traveled the world thanks to America’s Next Top Model.
tyra.com: What’s your biggest makeup tip?
VF: Lashes are the big thing. I love to go lash hunting to see if I can find the most realistic lash out there. When you’re buying lashes make sure you’re not going any longer than one centimeter past your natural eyelash. It should be sort of sparse, not too thick or it starts to look artificial. My favorite lashes to use are by Elegant, #821 in black. You can find them at any professional beauty supply store. I also like #210 by Andrea which can be found at drug stores.
tyra.com: Favorite Top Model contestant?
VF: Toccarra from Cycle 3. I loved her confidence even though she was full-size and her personality. She never lost her Midwest attitude. And she makes up well. I did her makeup once.
