- Hi. I'm celebrity hairstylist Darico Jackson. And today I'm going to show you how to style curly African-American hair. I know there are a lot of challenges to having curly hair and even bigger challenges trying to style it. I think that the problem that we get with styling curly hair is that we get caught up in trying to comb it. With curly hair you want to go in and finger finger style it so that you're not abrupting the curl pattern and making it frizzy. You just kind of work with what you have organically and you'll be a little bit more successful with it. So, today I'm going to do a quick little pin up on Chelsea. It kind of looks like a mohawk or a fohawk. It's something that you can do at home. And it's great for any curl texture and any curl type, whether it be really, really tight curls like Chelsea's or even loose curls. So, we're going to start with a leave in conditioning cream. And I'm going to use the Mizani Curl Soft. So, to start it doesn't take much in the styling process. And I will just use just a little bit. Maybe about a nickel size. You're going to rub your hands together, and I'm going to leave it on my hands as opposed to working all the way through and as I'm styling it, I'm using from my hands. OK. So, once we have a little product on our hands, you can start the styling process. So, I'm going to twist the sides up a little bit. And if you notice the product instantly starts to take away a lot of the frizz in the hair. And you just take a hair pin and pin it up. It's really really a simple idea. And for someone with a small head like Chelsea, you don't really need to take too many twists on the side, probably three big ones. It kind of gives it more of a fashionable look. So, if you notice I haven't picked up much more product because during the pin up process you don't want to have too much product in there. Because you want to show a lot of the texture. You only need a little bit just to take away the frizz. And then you're going to go on the other side and do the same thing. So, before I start the other side I'm going to go back and reapply. And again, you're working it through as you're styling so product on your hand is just enough and then you're going to go back in when you redefine the style. So, again because Chelsea's head is not that big, can go in and do three big twists on the side. Because you know this is something that you want to do quick and on the run. You might be coming from work and you want a quick style before you go out. And you can do this in the car. Just take a little moisturizer, it's already on my hands, and we're going to pin it up and the style is almost done. So, once you have the hair all pinned up on the side you can kind of see the shape coming through. It's kind of like a mohawk shape. You can see it from the sides. Then you're going to take about a nickel size of the product, just a little bit. You're going to emulsify again and then you just take little ringlets out. And this product is great because it instantly defines the curl. And you're going to go through and just redefine a lot of the curls to create your shape. The best thing about curly hair is that, you see that? It goes through and here's a prefect ringlet; is that you can go in especially when it's really really curly, and create abstract shapes. So, you can use, it can go through and you can define every curl or you can just use a few defined curls as accent pieces to create your design. Get a little more product if you need it. And you can see as you go along, how much product you'll need. Everybody's hair is different so everybody's hair's ability to absorb is a lot different. So, whereas someone like Chelsea who has really really tight curls, you might use a little bit more product. And then if you have someone with a looser curl, you can go in an use a little bit of product. But nonetheless, you want to go in and define that shape as much as you can to create a nice style. So, with curly hair it's pretty simple because your hair is curly, it's going to do it naturally. And you want to go in there and just kind of find the curl and twist it in the direction that it grows. You don't want to fight the curl pattern that's already there. And when you do that the curls come in a lot faster and instantly as you can see on Chelsea's hair. So on her hair her curls kind of go clockwise. So, I'm just twisting them clockwise. And it's happening for me. So, the best thing about using a moisturizing styling cream is because curly hair is so dry, it's offering you and opportunity to replenish the moisture as you style. Which is very important because it's going to help you to show definition a little bit better in your styling process. So, a lot of the times when you're styling, get a little creative. You don't necessarily go through the whole head. I know you don't have that much time on your way to work when you're trying to style it. Sometimes you can just go in and define a few because you have the initial shape there. And so I'm going to do just the front of Chelsea's hair. And I might go in and do maybe one or two around the rest if it just to make the pattern a little bit more consistent. But sometimes it's nice to kind of work with what you have going on naturally. So, now you can see I'm almost done with Chelsea. Now, when you're styling your own hair at home you definitely want to do something that fits you. I thought this was appropriate for her, don't you? Because I think it's very cute. You can go in and redefine all of it. You could do the whole top area the same. You could even do asymmetrical and have one side down. There are a lot of different ideas that you can use when you're curling, when you're styling curly hair. Curly hair is just a lot of fun. It kind of does what it does, it is. So, from the side it's very very cute. You got a nice silhouette her, of a mohawk and from the front. And then from the other side it's equally as cute. Now, you don't have to be symmetrical on both sides but you can go asymmetrical. It's up to you. So, there you have it. That's how you style curly African-American hair. I'm Darico Jackson. Thanks for watching.
