- Hi, I'm celebrity hairstylist Darico Jackson and today, I'm going to show you how to spike African-American hair. So, we're going to start by spiking Bianca's hair dry. We're going to use a wax and today I'm going to use the Mizani Defyne Wax. So, you're going to just take a little bit out, it's a little thick. Once you get a nice amount, not too much, go in and emulsify it a little bit. I like to cover my entire hand with it. And then just really you're going to go in there and kind of detail it and make it funky. Start on the face and create nice spikes in the style that you already had. So, I like to go in and just kind of rough it up a little bit and show the texture. You want to see as much texture as you possibly can. I just kind of keep playing in it until it gets the shape that I like. And if there's not enough product, take a little bit more. The best thing about spiking is you really can't use too much. With Bianca's hair, it's very thick and so I want to try and maintain as much volume as you can. And the best thing about it is I started out dry. So, it kind of gives me the opportunity to build the wax hold shape so you can keep growing and growing and building and building. So, now that I got the shape in there, and she looks great. You know, spiking is personal so of course you want to make it personal. I like to go in there and just piece out the frame. And you just literally take a little bit of wax and put it on the tip of your fingers and go in and just kind of spike the bangs a little bit. We're making Bianca a rocker chick. So, the wax is good because it holds out the humidity, keeps the hair nice and shiny, and silky as you can see. And I think she looks wonderful. So, to hold th shape, I added a little bit of hairspray at the end. And so there you have it. Now she's ready for a night on the town. So, that's how you spike African-American hair.
