- Hi, I'm Rodney Cutler, a stylist, a salon owner, and I'm going to share with you how to slick back your hair with gel. So if you've ever had short hair, you know it looks good most days, but sometimes, there's a little boredom that kicks in, and you want to spice it up. Nothing better than slicking your hair back with gel to add a little bit of drama, sophistication, and take you into the evening. So my recommendation for this technique, gel and a small-tooth comb. We're going to use Redken Hardwear 16. It's a fabulous gel, it's going to slide through the hair. It's not flaky, and it's going to last throughout the evening. So there's no hard rules with this look. Whether you want it to look curly or straight, it's really quite simple, but it's about being disciplined, and applying the product through. You can start on wet hair, or you can start on dry hair. If you do want a straight slick look, then blow dry the hair first, and get it smooth and shiny. So the first thing we need to do, is start on the underneath hair. So removing some of the hair with sectioning clips, so you can layer the gel on the underneath will make sure that it doesn't bubble out, and it stays slick and straight, and back off the face throughout the day or night. Another trick I like to do is to apply the gel straight onto the comb. This way when we comb it through, it's really setting into the roots and getting that hair in the direction that we want. You can see, if you get to the underneath quick and early, it will set, and it will create the form for the layers on top of the head. What we don't want is some areas to be dry and some areas to be wet looking. We want to have consistency all the way through. So taking very small section, putting the gel on the comb, and combing through. I would comb the product through the hair five to six times with your comb, so that you know that it's evenly distributed all the way through. So we've layered the product in section by section. What that does is that it seals and locks the product in, so it will have long-lasting effects. When you get to the front, you have a couple of choices. We can work with the side part and make it sweepy and very strong, which adds a little bit of drama, or, we can go straight back, which is what we're going to do here. So continue with the product on your comb, combing straight back. So this is the classic wet slick back look. I think what's special about this look, is that it can take a short hair cut that you wear similar everyday, to a whole 'nother place. It's chic, sophisticated, works brilliantly with juicy red lips. So here's your slick back look with gel. I'm Rodney Cutler, and thank you for watching.
