- Hi, I'm Giovanni Giuntoli and I'm a professional hairstylist and I'm going to share with you today how to get a French twist. A French twist is a very classic look but in a few minutes you'll see how easily you can achieve this with just very few tools and a little bit of product. So at home you'll need a few key tools. You'll need long hairpins, your tail comb, a finishing brush, sectioning clip, and some aerosol spray. I'm choosing to work with Redken's Forceful 23. We're going to spray ample amounts of aerosol spray throughout the whole head from scalp to ends. After prepping with the product we're going to get into sectioning the hair and getting you ready to put into a French twist. First things first, we're going to go and section out a piece of the front hair right around the hairline approximately an inch to an inch and a half back and 2 to 3 inches wide depending on face shape and hair thickness. When having thicker hair you won't need as large a section, for finer hair you'll need a little bit more. Use your sectioning clip to take this hair and secure it out of your way. Next, we're going to drag all of the hair back to the nape area with our finishing brush, making sure to hold all of the hair in your hand and keeping it low in the nape not above your occipital bone which means the top of the ear. Once you have control of all of the hair, go back in with a little bit more of your finishing spray to control any fly-aways. Have your long pins ready cause now we're going to start. Holding all of your hair in one hand you're going to start to twist the hair. As you start to twist your ponytail up you're going to lift the tail and the ends up towards the top of your head. As you feel that twist when you reach back you feel that pleat in the back, you're going to take your long pins and to secure it you're going to go into the twist, touch your scalp and flip it over and push the pin back the way it started coming. Taking your tails and your ends you can easily take your ends and twist them into a round shape. Once again, taking your long 3 inch pin and going into the round of the shape and down at the scalp. Coming around the front we can now work with this section and you have a few options that you can play with depending on how you like to see your hair around your face or away from your face. Comb out this section and the options are this, you can either leave the hair down around the face in order to have more of a fresh feel to a classic look or if you prefer you can take these ends and with one more long hairpin you can drape this to the back and secure this wave right to your French twist. Dropping this section down not only keeps it away from your face but it also adds a nice elegance to it as well and softens the shape up a little bit and updates it too. Here's a modern take on a classic look of a French twist. I'm Giovanni Giuntoli and thank you for watching.
