- Hi, I'm Rodney Cutler. I'm a stylist and salon owner, and I'm going to share with you how you take long layered hair cut, and turn it into a stylish messy bun. So this is the perfect solution for when you've been at the office all day. You have that evening event, and you don't have time to go to the hair dresser. The messy bun is a quick fix, it's easy to do, and it's very very stylish to take you from day to evening. With all these looks, we like to keep it simple. So all you're going to need is hair pins, pony tail holder, back combing brush and hair spray. So to help create the texture that we're looking for, I'm going to use Redken Quick Dry 18 hair spray. So the beauty of this look is to really work with the texture that you have. It's not complicated. But what we want to do is add a little bit of support at the roots using the hair spray. So you can be really sort of liberal with it. Spray a lot of spray in and get that texture up. Again we want that messy sexy bun, with that natural texture. I really like aerosol hair sprays because they're a little dryer, 'cause we don't want to saturate the hair where it's wet. The other important thing with your hair sprays is that they're light enough that you can still rake your hands through them. So what we want to do is create a little back-combing with the brush. We don't want it to be really really frizzy, but this back-combing with the brush will create a nice base, and we loosely can brush it out, so it gives it a little bit of support and hold, but still light enough that you can brush through. A couple squirts extra of hair spray, and then what we do is we start to fold the hair back into a low-sitting pony tail. I like to use bungee cords, they're very simple and effective to use to create pony tails. All you do is place one hook into the hair, anchor it, wrap it around, easy to create tension, and anchor the other end in to the hair. What this does, is it secures your pony tail and frees up your hands for your next section. Once you've secured the pony tail, you're ready for your bun. Separate the pony tail in two section and start twisting to create your bun. Once you've created your shape, start to anchor with your hair pins. If any of the ends are falling out and it looks great, leave it. It's a messy bun. It's meant to be simple, effortless and stylish. So once you're happy with the result and the texture, be sure to secure it, put always one more pin in, hair spray from a distance, and you are good to go. So remember with your messy buns, they work on straight hair, they work on curly hair, but it's really about letting go of it looking perfect, 'cause what's beautiful about it, it's casual, it's understated, but ultimately it's really stylish. So there you have it. A look that can take you from day to night using your long layers to create a messy bun. I'm Rodney Cutler, and thanks for watching.
