Hi, I'm Rodney Cutler. I'm a stylist and salon owner. I'm going to share with you how we use a flat iron to create pin curls for that modern take on a retro look. So don't be nervous. You are going to need a few tools, but they're really simple to use. Straightening iron, sectioning clips, pin curl clips, hair spray and heat styling spray. So the heat styling spray we're going to use is Iron Silk 07 by Redken. So what I did to prep Chelsie's hair is I blow dried Iron Silk. What that does is create some heat protection, and it also give it a nice firm base to create the set. So we're going to start on the underneath sections. First of all, section off some of this hair so it's easier and cleaner for you to work your pin curls. So take a nice flat section on the underneath. Be generous with the hairspray, that will also help you grip it. And we're going to create a nice barrel. We're going to turn this section in towards the face, and using a pin curl clip place it in. You also notice that the section is dragged from the root. That will create a softer effect, a flatter effect towards the root, and the body towards the end. With your straightening iron you're going to go in and heat it, which is going to create a setting effect. Just like you would if you had a curling iron or a hot roller. Let it cool down while it's still in the barrel. Feel free to alternate the direction of the curl. What that will do, it will give it a little bit more of a disheveled curl, and I think that's a little bit more modern. Okay, so what's great about this hair style is it really works on short hair or on long hair. And it really can take that short hair cut, that you know sometimes you get a little bored with, and take it to a whole new place. Flat iron, three to five seconds, let it cool down, move onto your next section and complete the whole head. The last section, wrap it around your fingers. We're going to twist the curl, slightly alternate the curl, pin to hold, heat it up, three to five seconds, and let it set. So now we've completed the whole head, let it cool down before you take your pin curl clips out. That way the set will last longer. Now when removing the clips, don't brush it out yet. Get a feel for how much curl you have, and you can start to see the shape evolve as you're taking the clips out. And you can start to shake it out a little bit. You can see we've taken out the pins on one side, and it's really an amazing curl set that you start to create. And you can see how much hold. Don't be afraid to run your hands through, and you can see the bounce that's coming into the hair, and it's really quite a unique set that you start to get. It has that retro feel, with a modern twist. I'm going to remove the rest of the pins, and then we're going to start to finalize the shape. But I'm really happy the way it's coming out. Now brush the hair through. What we're doing is creating that low side part, which will give it that retro feel. And a brush and push back. Brush the hair and slightly push back with the brush. You've got a lot of hold in there, so you can really brush right through. Don't be afraid that you're going to lose all the curl. It will bounce back instantly. So we've finished our look. This is a beautiful retro look with a modern twist. Perfect for events, holidays, parties, whatever, but the big occasion. So I know it looks scary, but if you follow the steps, it's actually easy to do. So that's how you create a pin curl set using a flat iron. I'm Rodney Cutler, and thank you for watching.
