Hi, I'm celebrity hairstylist, Darico Jackson and today I'm going to show you how to do your own rods on African-American hair. So to get started, you're going to need a few things. You're going to need a comb of course, a rattail comb preferably so that you can go through and part the hair as you're going along. You're going to need rods and you're going to need some type of setting gel or setting lotion. Today, I decided to use Mizana Foam Wrap. So as you can see I've already got started and we're almost done. I wanted to cut down on a little time for you. You're going to use a nice size ball of foam wrap, probably like a golf ball size. Then you're going to take it and rub it through the hair. Of course we've already previously shampooed the hair. When you're doing a rod set you want to choose a rod that's small enough to where you can spiral the hair around it, so if you have short hair, naturally you'll go with an even smaller rod. I chose flexi rods because flexi rods are going to give me more of a natural appeal so that I can create more of a naturally curly look on her short hair. You don't necessarily want to have straight parts in there because in the end it will be hard for you to brush them out. You want to kind of just slide it through there and maybe pick up a piece or two. They don't have to be like perfectly straight parts again. You might even want to try a crisscross pattern or bricklay if you will. So you're going to start on the end. You take the product and make sure you seal it all the way to the end and once you get there, you start right at the very bottom and you're going to wrap this way but you're going to come back around so that it kind of overlaps and you can see that and that's going to hold the end in place and then you're just going to spiral it on down. Now you can see what I mean by how much easier it is with a flexi rod because all you have to do is bend it. Let's do another one. You're going to take and make sure that end is nice and smooth and together, you wrap it around. You'll notice that the end is on the inside so that when I do start wrapping it back that way it will lock that end in so that it stays tight and you just wind it on down into a spiral, fold it over and you're done. So now that we've taken the rollers out, we're going to style it. I suggest you use a little polisher to style it and you want to finger style it because you don't want to get it too frizzy by combing it out. So you want to squeeze it with a little polisher to soften it up because you know, once you take them out of the dryer it can be a little firm and when you're finger styling you just want to separate them with your hand. I like to divide it into three pieces, one, two, three. Sometimes if you lose it when you separate it, just go back in and define it with your fingers. And that's how you do your own rods for African-American hair. I'm Darico Jackson. Thanks for watching.
