- Hi, I'm celebrity hair stylist Darico Jackson, and today I'm going to show you how to make African-American hair bouncy. So, this process works on any hair type, whether it's straight, relaxed, natural, wavy, curly or even the tightest of curls. So, here are the tools you're going to need. You're going to need a blow dryer, you're going to need a round brush, and you're going to need some type of protective oil. We've already shampooed and conditioned Ebony's hair, now we're going to take our oil. The oil that I chose today is a supreme oil, by Mizani. You only need a little bit of oil, because you don't want to weight the hair down. So, you're going to go in an emulsify it or stretch it. And you go in a message it and work it through the hair. You want to make sure that you get it in from scalp to end. I know a lot of times we have a tendency to just rub it over the top. but you want to go in and really really message it in so that the hair can absorb it. And you want to make sure that you really really get it in the ends real good, because you're going to smooth the hair when you round brush it. So, when you're looking for oil, your want to find an oil that has some natural ingredients in it. The oil that I use today has almond oil in it which is nice for smoothing hair. Almond oil is nice for sealing the cuticle and protecting it, so that it's easier for you to round brush and smooth out that hair. So, once you've applied the oil, now it's time to blow dry. So, when you're using a blow dryer to round brush you want to make sure you have a nice nozzle sos that you can apply the heat directly to the areas that you need to without blowing the hair out of shape. First step is to section off the hair. I like to use an all purpose comb to make sure that the hair is detangled from scalp to end before I apply the round brush. So, you're going to go and you're going to wrap it sideways. And when you turn your brush, you secure it down at the base. While you're heating, it's going to actually create volume because you've made an on base curl. So it's kind of like rolling your hair as well. Smoothing is going to be very important. And to smooth, you want to get as much tension as you possibly can up under there. And you're going to apply the heat directly to the bottom. And then go back on the other side. So, what I'm doing is I'm heating up the strands from below and I'm also straightening it from the scalp. And by putting the heat at the bottom of the strand, it creates lift and volume. As you can see the hair is straightening out. With African American hair, you have to straighten it first. It's also going to create lift. So the next step after straightening it, you want to turn the brush. So, you're going to heat it up first, as you're winding it down, bring it all the way up to the ends and then turn. And then you want to use a little cool shot and cool it down to lock the curl in there. So, now we've gotten the first section done. And as you can see, she has nice volume, it's very bouncy. Now, that we've gotten the first section done, and I'm going to go in and do the same thing over her whole head and finish it. Once you've established the curl, take a Y2 comb, comb it all forward and then toss it back. And then just go back in and detail the front and make yourself look cute. Look how gorgeous and bouncy her hair is and it's really shiny too. And that's how to make African-American hair bouncy. I'm Darico Jackson and thanks for watching.
