- I'm Rodney Cutler, I'm a hairstylist and salon owner and I'm here today to show you how to stop curly hair getting puffy. I know how challenging curly hair can be because I live it every day. But it's actually much simpler than you think. It's very defined techniques that can help you reduce the curl and I'm going to show you how to do it. So we're not going to overload you with zillions of products. Real simple. Large tooth comb to de-tangle the hair. A texturizing cream that's going to create curl support and separation and most important, a diffuser so we create that slow heat to define that curl. So to get started we're going to use Redken Tousle Whip 04. So my preference is always to start with damp hair. That way we can help define the curl that we're looking for. For medium to long hair I recommend using a nickel size amount of product. Now it's critical that we apply the product evenly through the hair. So the product's in the hair and now what we want to do is to design that curl. Create 1-2 inch sections and twist around your finger. This will give much more definition to the curl. Simple technique, the bigger the section, the more glamorous curl. Smaller the section, you're going to get a tight, bouncy curl. So work your way all across the hair and then you're ready to diffuse the hair. So when we get to drying the hair you have a couple of options. You can leave it natural. If you're going to use a hairdryer make sure you use a diffuser. We don't want a lot of air hitting the hair. Now simply lay the hair in the diffuser. You'll notice I'm not using my hand. I'm not pulling the curls apart and I'm not scrunching the hair. Very important to reduce the puffiness of the hair. Depending on the hair type will determine how long you leave the hair in the diffuser. But I would recommend 10 to 15 seconds. Gently pull it out of the diffuser and you'll start to see that curl forming. If you want a little bit more volume at the root, slightly tilt the hair and you'll get a little bit more lift at the roots. So now that we're finished with the diffuser you can see how beautiful and soft and bouncy the curls are. You really don't need to do anything else. Really soft, lots of movement. And most important the curls are not puffy. So there you have it, that's how you keep curly hair from getting puffy. I'm Rodney Cutler and thanks for watching.
