- Hi, I'm Jeremy Clark professional hairstylist and salon owner, and today I'm going to talk to you about how to create a slicked back ponytail. So to create this look you'll need some bobby pins, some elastics, and a natural bore bristle brush. I'll be using the Garnier Fructis Brilliantine Shine Glossing Spray. So I'm going to start by sectioning the hair, brushing the hair back away from the face, taking a section from the top of the crown to the back of the ear. Gonna continue that over to the other side. And I'm going to section out the top section, the top of the crown. What I'm doing is I'm going to create a little ponytail right here at the back of the head and that's going to be our anchor for the rest of the style and the reason I do that is to create a point or a foundation for all the other hair to pin to and it just makes it really secure, it will keep the style in for the whole day. Okay, so there's our foundation ponytail, then I'm going to take sections throughout the rest of the back and lift those up into the ponytail and secure those. Okay, there's the first section, I'm going to do one section here, two, three, four, about five sections that I'll pull into this first ponytail. Now I'm pulling both of the sides in the back from behind the ear just brushing out all the little tangles and flyaways and brushing those right into the ponytails that we've already established and you can see how this makes it really secure. So this is a great way to really make sure that, that ponytail stays in place and that you get all the flyaways and that it doesn't slip out halfway through the day, makes it very clean and it just keeps everything right there. So my next step is I'm going to work some of the top side into the ponytail on both sides. I'll work some of the top end and then I'll finish at the end by pulling the sides in. I've pulled a section on each side right around the mid, the middle of the sides through to the back, connected it to the ponytail and I'm just going to take the rest of the top now and feed that into the ponytail as well. With the, almost the finished product in you can really see the detail. I want to take a little bit of the shine spray and just to kind of catch some of those flyaways and give it a nice smooth finish, I'm going to put a little bit right on top. So I spray some in my hand, break it down and then just catch all those little flyaways. Okay, so what we have left are these two side pieces and I'm going to finish the ponytail by pulling those and joining those to the rest. A slicked back ponytail is a really great way to just add a little bit of style to your look without, without having too much effort. It's also really nice when your clothing is a little bit more extravagant; if you have an event to go to and you're wearing a nice dress you don't want to take away from that and a ponytail is also great if you want to show off your facial features and a slicked back ponytail I feel like is a little bit more dressy than just your regular ponytail so that's why we want to take good care to clean up all the flyaways. The old way of doing this would be to put a lot of gel in the hair and really lock it, slick it back. I like to do this with just a little shine spray because it's softer, it looks more modern, it doesn't look as fake and plastic. Just to finish off the ponytail I'm putting a little bit more shine spray on my fingers and catching any of those little hairs that didn't quite make it in. One last thing I like to do to really polish out the style and make it a little more sophisticated and to cover that elastic with some hair pulled from underneath the ponytail and I'm just lightly twisting the hair and I'm going to wrap it right over the elastic and this really dresses up your style and make it look finished. Then I'm just going to pin that last little tail right into the pony. Okay, and I'm just using a little bit of hairspray to give me just that last bit of control for all the little flyaways. So Cris I'm just going to tilt your head, you can really see that nice wrap of the hair around the ponytail and see that this really has dressed up her look and polished it. She looks put together but with minimal effort. There you go, that's how to do a slicked back ponytail. I'm Jeremy Clark, thanks for watching.
