- Hi, I'm Carla Kay, Celebrity Manicurist. Today, I'm going to show you how to avoid getting nail polish on the sides of your fingers. Let me give you the best technique for polishing your fingernails. We're going to use a base coat, a color coat and a top coat. So, the tools that you're going to need are an orange wood stick, a little bit of remover, a cotton ball, some base coat, a color coat and a top coat to finish off. And for the color coat, I'm going to use Playdate by Essie. Okay, so our first step is going to be the base coat. The base coat is very important because it works as a primer and it actually helps adhere the nail polish to the nail to avoid chipping. It can also help even out if you have ridges or bumps in the nail. When I apply the base coat, I'm going to actually let it dry for about a minute before I apply the, the color coat. So, now that I've applied the base coat, I'm going to start with my color coat. You want to avoid getting it on top of the cuticle, so just stay a little bit away and try not to go too far on the sides so we avoid getting it on the sides of the nails, in the skin. So, you can start with three strokes, starting in the middle, flatten out the brush, all the way, pull all the way down to the side down, to the left and then you can go over with smaller strokes to kind of even out the polish. But, the three strokes gives you kind of a base to work with when you have to reapply other strokes. Okay, so now I've applied two coats to Angela's nails and the finish step would be to apply some top coat. The top coat will actually seal down the polish and avoid chippings and add a high gloss shine. I would actually advice waiting between the color coat and the top coat, about one to two minutes. Another tip with the top coat to avoid chipping is you can actually cap off the edge of the nails with the top coat. So, you just want to lightly go over the tops 'cause that'll help seal down the polish. So, once you've applied all your layers of fingernail polish, we're going to take an orange wood stick, put some cotton and we're just going to swirl a little bit around and this is going to help us clean up any mistakes that we've made. We just dip it in a little bit of remover and just lightly go over the edges and that'll help us clean up any mistakes that we might have. I like to use an orange wood stick 'cause I find that a Q-tip is a little too thick and heavy with cotton. And this way, it's just a little bit on the edge of the orange wood stick to kind of get in those creases where a Q-tip couldn't really get in there 'cause it's, it's too thick. So, for the perfect looking polish nails, it took three steps, a base coat, a color coat and a top coat. And you don't have to be so perfect with your nail polish 'cause you saw how easy it is to clean up. And that's how to avoid getting nail polish on the side of your fingers. I'm Carla Kay, thanks for watching.
