Meet Shyema: typeF's Fashion Week's Behind-the-Scenes Guru

Hi typeF.com!

Can you believe it’s September already? All of you fashionistas know what that means: FASHION WEEK! I’m excited to be covering it for typeF.com this year, and while I have worked as an editor and writer for years in New York, last season was the first time I really got to sink my teeth into it.

Why? Despite having freelanced at big titles in the past (Marie Claire, Vogue), it’s actually my lifestyle blog, Beauty and the Feast (www.beautyandthefeastblog.com), that has really taken me from the office to the tents.  And believe me; I’ve taken some mental notes of what I need to help me get through this one.

Here’s what’s in my personal survival bag:
-    My camera. I can’t afford to miss a minute, and you never know what’s going to happen backstage. Last year, at one of the big-name presentations, six stylists rushed to tend to a model who was nowhere near done half an hour before showtime. As you can see, it looked like absolute chaos!

NYFW is also a time when people are dressed to the nines. Some are literally all dressed up with nowhere to go except hang out around Lincoln Center and take in all of the action from afar.  Between the crowds and the flawless editors running between shows, you never know when you’re going to find some inspiration--or run into a celebrity!

Yep, you bet I snapped a pic with Jay Manuel when I spotted him leaving a show!

-    My tape recorder. This is a given, seeing as I am running to interview stylists and designers at any given moment.  Even when I’m not planning to cover a show, I’ll have this on me. You never know when you’ll serendipitously end up in a spot on the red carpet to interview the Kardashians (like I was last season at a QVC event!):

-    My Flip recorder. I ran into one of my makeup idols last year, Mally Roncal.  This was incredibly exciting because she’s every bit as lovable in person as she is on TV. I bee lined for her when I spotted her at an event and started gushing about how much I loved her products and asked if she’d be game for a quick interview. Being the adorable thing she is, she flashed her million-watt smile and gave me one of my favorite interviews ever on the spot. Thank God I had a video recorder on me!

-    Comfy roll-up shoes. I say roll-up because with my heels in my bag to change into, I don’t have much room. Trust me, with all that running around, your feet will thank you.

-    Fiber One bars. Sometimes you just won’t have time for a sit down meal. I’ll have three to four shows in a row to cover, and I need energy. These ones are my personal favorites!

-    Lip gloss. Street photographers are rampant during this time of the year. Last season I was unexpectedly snapped to and from the tents and stopped for interviews. One of my pictures even ended up in a photo gallery online! You should always be camera-ready, and for me, that’s having my favorite lip gloss on hand.

-    Finally, coffee! Need I say more?

Here’s to another week of glam and fashion!

Xoxo
