Day 3: Plaids, Plackets and Peplums

By: Laurie Brucker

Plaids, plackets and peplums.  Say that three times in a row fast! Day three of New York Fashion Week kicked up the trend sightings a serious notch.  Spotted on the runways was fur in every imaginable way, "moto" style jackets, peacoats, body con (short for body conscious) dresses, skinny cropped pants, and lastly loads and loads of leather in all catagories.  Think: leather head to toe.  This Fall 2012 is going to be the season to go for it.   So with all the excitement, I've pulled out three trends today that are wearable, easily understandble, and will be the perfect update to you fall 2012 closets.

Bold Statement Coats. Fall 2011 runway collections brought the rise of the bold and bright statement coat. Lipstick reds, cobalt blues, mustard yellows and winter greens took reign as the new winter staple.  Well this trend has evolved and excitingly so!  Fall 2012 calls for high contrast black and winter white plaid or patterned coats.  Think about how wintery fabulous you can be when stomping the frigded streets in such a bold coat. Get on the trend early and go find yourself one in an early spring sale you'll be ahead of the game come fall!

Contrast Plackets & Collars. The basic button front shirt for fall is getting a stylish and simple upgrade: contrast centerfront plackets and collars.(and in day three's case: all black).  And interestingly, each black is an invisible placket. Meaning the buttons are hidden from the eye. This creates a clean, ladylike and sophisticated feel for the classic shirt. Come fall, these blouses will be perfect with a pencil skirt at the office or skinny jeans and booties for the weekend.  They are officially a fall 2012 wardrobe must have!

Feather & Fur Peplums. I really do love to see when trends evolve in their style cycles.  The ever popular peplum of Spring 2012 has been given a wintery update.  Fur and feathers!   It's edgy, slightly dominatrix-y,  (which I love) and still feels very lady like at the same time as it creates the ultimate waist emphasis.  With each designer giving their different twist on the concept, beit feathers or fur, this new winter vest shape will be the urbanista's go to outerwear of choice.  Wear a chunky sweater under it in a contrast color and you will be doubly right on trend for Fall 2012.

Very exciting day everyone!   I've got a few more trends up my stylish sleeve,  I believe day 4 will validate. Can't wait to share!

xoxo,

Laurie
