Spandex shorts -- or as many women call them "safety shorts" -- are a great way to prevent any embarrassing slip of your girly bits when you're wearing a mini skirt. They're also great layered under a tunic when it's not quite long enough to cover your entire bottom and it's too warm out to wear leggings. Many women feel like spandex shorts are just another layer like shorts or tights but some regard them as the only layer needed. So is underwear really necessary?
Pro: No Panty Lines
Panty lines are embarrassing and often times we don't even notice that they're there. Thongs, which can prevent panty lines when wearing spandex and other tight clothing, are often extremely uncomfortable and are breeding grounds for bacteria. This is why going commando is a great option. If you're wearing an extra short skirt or tunic that might lead to a dreaded VPL (visible panty line), ditch your underwear. As long as the spandex is completely opaque, you won't have to worry about being exposed.
Con: Rashes, Infections and Discomfort
Going commando might seem like a good idea, especially if you're wearing spandex shorts without a lot of breathing room, but it could actually be uncomfortable. Without wearing underwear, you are open to chafing, which could cause an itchy, uncomfortable or burning rash. Those seams on spandex shorts can dig into your skin and actually be quite uncomfortable. You also leave yourself more open to infections because there's a direct path to your genitals that isn't protected by your underwear. The increased susceptibility to urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis might not be worth it.
Pro: You'll Feel Sexy
You might be a little nervous at first to ditch your undies, but once you do, you'll find yourself feeling a little bit more sexy. According to "Cosmopolitan," going sans underwear gives you a rush of adrenaline that boosts your confidence and makes you feel sexier. Since sexiness is mostly just a mindset, what do you have to lose? In addition, if you tell your man you're going sans underwear, he won't be able to keep his hands off of you.
Con: Lack of Protection
Wearing spandex shorts without underwear is really about personal preference. There's no right or wrong answer, but many women feel that it's uncomfortable because they lack the insurance that underwear provides. It's not uncommon for women to spot in between their periods or to have discharge. Typically, underwear protects the outer layer of your clothes from this, but without it, there is a possibility that it could show through. In any event, your skirt does provide coverage, so it wouldn't be completely on display. If you're wearing thick spandex, you should be in the clear.
