Wear a trench coat right if you have a muscular, athletic figure.

The trench coat is one of the most timeless, classic staples for any woman's wardrobe. While you may want to rush to heed the advice of Tim Gunn, fashion expert, or Stacy London, fashion consultant, that the trench coat is a "must-have" item in a woman's closet, it is even more important that you choose the right trench coat and know how to wear it correctly for your body type.

1.

Shop around for a trench coat in a neutral color rather than one in too bright or bold a hue. If you have a more muscular, athletic figure, attention-getting colors can bring too much focus to the bulk of your upper half. Tan, cream, and brown are all ideal color choices for an athletic body type.

2.

Look for a coat that falls mid-thigh to give you more of an hourglass figure. A trench with a V-neck can also help divert eyes from broad shoulders and arms and elongate your look.

3.

Choose a coat that has detailing in the right areas to add softness to an athletic figure. A wide belt around the waist helps add femininity to your athletic shape, and if you are more muscular on your upper half -- a sort of strawberry shape -- you want a trench coat that features detailing on the bottom, such as a back slit or ruffling along the bottom edge. For athletic women with bulked up legs, a trench with detailing around the collar to draw the eye upward works best.

4.

Wear the coat with the belt tied up snugly around your waist area. Avoid leaving it untied or even just hanging loose around your hips -- the last thing you want to do is create unnecessary bulk in any area. By tying the belt around your waist and securing with a pretty bow or even a double-knot with the ends of the belt hanging down a tad you are creating a defined waistline and packing a punch with your womanliness. Woman, hear yourself roar!
