When you were a little girl, your sock drawer probably was stocked with pairs of white, light pink and black tights. These wardrobe staples carried you through ballet lessons, birthday parties and even ill-fated attempts at looking punk -- your parents thought the holes in your tights looked more like Swiss cheese than anything else. You keep your grown-up wardrobe as chic as possible, so when you catch wind of a tights trend, you have no idea how to incorporate them. But your old favorites are back in classic form and with some amped-up style.

1.

Keep your look classic with black opaque tights, but ... give it a twist. Approaching new trends can feel overwhelming, so take baby steps. Wear your black tights under a dress or skirt to get used to your tights-clad legs. Intensify the style and try out the shorts-over-tights look. Go for a heavier short like a tweed or velvet to keep it wintery. Tuck in a menswear-inspired blouse and always go with black shoes to avoid breaking the outfit up. Add some leg length with wedges or booties, or push the menswear vibe with some cute brogues.

2.

Try tights with a little texture for some added depth and a little whimsical flair. Start with a subdued option like sheer black Swiss dot tights. You can wear them with just about any dress or skirt and a pair of heels or ballet flats. If you're feeling daring, go for a more in-your-face pattern like an allover diamond, fishnet effect. Pair these tights with a feminine dress to add some softness to your sultry leg wear.

3.

Go with an vibrant, opaque, patterned tight. This look is not for the faint of heart, so get ready for some heads turning in your direction! Think saturated colors and patterns like blue and gray stripes -- this look demands high-octane footwear. Go for a hue that blends with your tights, but let your love for heels and chunky platforms reign free. Keep the rest of your look toned down to avoid competition from piece to piece -- a solid dress is best.

4.

Embrace your inner red-hot passion for color and unleash the colorful tights! From fiery hues like red to cooler colors like violet, take your pick from a full spectrum of eye-catching leg wear. Stick to all neutrals for the rest of your look because you're going vibrant with the tights. Combine your blast of color with a black dress and black heels for a night out, or add some edginess to your work wear -- purple tights under an otherwise unassuming gray skirt suit may be just the extra jolt you need along with your morning coffee.

Tips & Tricks

Follow this trick for an easy way to keep them straight and sag-free when putting them on: Lay the tights flat and, keeping your fingers on either side of one tight leg with your thumbs inside, gather the fabric toward you, scrunching it up until your reach the toe. Insert your toes and slowly the pull the tight leg all the way up, keeping the fabric taut as you go. Repeat with the other leg. Perfect!
