Ballet slippers are among the most versatile of shoes. You may wear them just as easily from day to night as you can from dressy to casual. These simple-yet-stylish flats are perfect with pants, dresses and skirts all year long. To keep from shivering in the winter months, however, you need more than just your favorite flats on your feet. Look cool but stay warm with tights or pantyhose to suit your total ensemble, including your shoes.

Pantyhose

The fashion taboo against pantyhose for the youthful has died. Now, you don't have to a senior citizen or working in an uber professional environment to don these stockings. When your ballet flats complete a classy outfit, such as a smart skirt and blazer, pantyhose are the perfect choice for your legs. Pantyhose are also great when you want to add a little shine to your stems.

Tights

Tights have a thickness pantyhose don’t. So when you want that extra coverage under your casual skirt or party dress, tights are the way to go with ballet flats. Indie fashionista Zooey Deschanel regularly rocks this look with vintage dresses and even skin-tight shorts. When you’ve got to dress up and it’s cold outside and your feet hurt, leave the heels at home. Instead, step into a soft pair of tights and your most comfy ballet flats.

Colors

With nylons, you generally want to stick to two colors: black or a nude that matches your skin tone. With tights, you can go wild with bright colors and busy prints. Color-coordinate with the details on your ballet slippers, but don’t overdo it. Blue tights bring out the blue jewels on your shoes, but gold tights paired with gold slippers is just a joke about your pot-o-gold waiting to happen.

Tips

With skirts and dresses, pantyhose and tights with ballet slippers are A-OK. But, you’re committing a fashion crime when you swap out the skirt for a pair of pants. No socks, no hose and no tights when you pair ballet flats with pants, especially the skinny jean variety. And when you do wear pantyhose or tights with your flats, make sure your feet don’t slip out of those slippers. Ballet flats tend to cling better to bare feet, so you might need to add some adhesive grips to keep you walking gracefully.
