They aren't just your mom's jeans anymore -- yeah, high-waisted jeans are officially back in style. If you wear them right, high-waisted jeans make your waist look tiny, giving you a sleek, sophisticated silhouette. Plus, you can sit down without revealing too much. But this bold fashion choice takes some planning, 'cause you're also taking the risks of showcasing your muffin top or looking like you're headed to an '80s costume party. Don't take chances -- get the scoop before you select your outfit.

Make sure your jeans fit properly. Some cuts of jeans are forgiving enough that a precise fit isn't necessary, but high-waisted jeans should hug your curves. Your jeans should be snug through your waist, butt and crotch, with no gaps or saggy areas.

Look for darker rinses of denim. Darker shades help you look slimmer, giving your legs a long, lean silhouette.

Stick with wide-leg jeans if you have curvy hips -- the width of the pant leg will balance your hips and butt. Skinny jeans flatter leaner shapes, but they're less forgiving than wide-leg pants. And check that your jeans have medium or large pockets -- small pockets or no pockets will make your bottom look way bigger.

Tuck in your top to highlight your waist. Choose a shorter top -- tucking in lots of fabric will make you look lumpy and uneven.

Add a stylish thin belt to highlight your natural waist.

Slide on a hot pair of heels to elongate your silhouette. Heels help slim your figure, especially if you're curvy. If you're naturally lean, pair ballet flats with your high-waisted jeans for a modern, casual look.
