That much-coveted invitation to your favorite fashion event is finally here! Now comes the big question: What should you wear? Whether you are selecting an outfit for a fashion show, magazine launch or party to celebrate an up-and-coming designer, how you look will truly matter. After all, you'll be surrounded by people who live and breathe fashion. You need to choose your clothes carefully and be sure to add statement pieces that demonstrate your good taste and sense of style.

Show Your Personal Style

A fashion event offers a great opportunity to express yourself in your outfit. Whether you want to wear a simple cocktail dress or a great pair of premium jeans with a strappy top, the key is to look for pieces that have clean, modern lines. Extra detailing, such as a one-shoulder design, an asymmetrical hemline and platform shoes can turn a basic look into something fashion-forward.

Play With Color

When you look in your closet and can't figure out what to pull for your upcoming event, some stylists recommend passing over basic black items in search of a bright color that will make you stand out. Fashion editors love eye-popping effects, so follow their lead and choose a classic design in a saturated shade.

Go to Great Lengths

How about wearing a maxi-dress, either with gladiator sandals or a beautiful pair of sling-back heels? Look for one with an eye-catching design and a flattering cut. This is a safe pick that can work well no matter what the other guests wear. You can also go to the other extreme and select a figure flattering mini-dress.

Be Inspired

Look to the runway for inspiration when deciding what to wear to a fashion event. Draped harem pants, elegant jumpsuits, animal prints, retro patterns and lace accents can all be good details to incorporate into your style. Just be sure to pick one trend (rather than many) and build your outfit around it.

Consider Comfort

You want to look your best, but you don't want to sacrifice your comfort, particularly if you are hitting the runway shows and will be on your feet a lot. Plan to layer up with a structured jacket, boyfriend blazer or shrunken cardigan so you can easily adjust your outfit even as the conditions change. Pick comfortable shoes that are also stylish. Consider a platform pump, gladiator sandals or high wedges that will allow you to move around easily and carry an oversized handbag big enough for some essentials, including a pair of flats, a bottle of water and your sunglasses.

Labels Matter

Don an item from the designer's own collection when you head to a runway show or fashion event. In some circles, this is considered to be quite appropriate and a tribute to the designer being honored.
