Wear It Day to Night: Suit Up in Long Skirts

The long skirt is the newest must-have piece. Like jeans, T-shirts and blazers, this essential can be worn in more ways than you might ever imagine. Designers such as Donna Karen, Calvin Klein, Chloe and Mark Jacobs have shown that the long skirt can work on weekends, at the office or as evening wear. Don't believe it? Get your hands on one and try out a few anytime-of-the-day-or-night looks.
Off to Work
Start your day off right with a skirt that makes you feel comfortable, feminine and elegant. A long skirt fits the bill, especially if it is a slimmer fit and either midi (mid-calf) or maxi length (to the tops of the feet). Avoid a skirt that goes all the way to the floor for daytime, as this is a more evening-appropriate length. A clean-lined tunic and a blazer are well-suited to the minimalist trend, and are professional enough for the office. Add booties or other platform heels to finish the look with polish.
Prep for a Lunch Date
Whether you're heading to a lunch date straight from the office or home, a long skirt is still a great essential for a casual date look. Wear the skirt and tunic, but strip off the blazer. Add a skinny belt at the waist and sandals instead of heels. Keep jewelry casual and playful -- an unusual pendant necklace or large, colorful acrylic bangles. Keep the look punchy and fun with colorful accessories -- never fear the neon!
Head to Happy Hour
While your girlfriends may all hit up happy hour in their work attire, try switching things up so you really feel like you're off the clock. Wear a tank top tucked into your long skirt. A top in the same color will make the outfit feel like one long dress. Wear wood or cork-soled wedges for the casual vibe they lend to your look and a clutch in an unexpected, bright hue. Don't shy away from a major statement-making necklace or earrings to give this look a "wow" factor.
Turn It into Evening Wear
Whether you're headed to the Oscars or just out to dinner, if you wear it with confidence, your long skirt can look effortlessly cool with a fitted white T-shirt. Choose a small evening bag with beading or other embellishment, and look for a skirt that goes all the way to the floor -- especially one that flares out at the bottom. Fabulous shoes and extra-sparkly jewels will show off your rebellious take on the evening gown and keep you from looking under dressed. Keep in mind, confidence is key to pulling off this fashion-forward look.
