Camisoles are tricky little items. They're not quite bras and they're not quite tank tops, which means working them into your wardrobe can get confusing. What's the deal? Do you even need to wear one? If you're wearing a regular T-shirt, chances are you can go without. While a camisole isn't a necessity, there are some occasions when wearing one can help out.

Camisole Camouflage

Delicate, sheer blouses can look pretty dreamy, but they can also show off a bit too much of your goods. This is where a camisole can really save your look. If you can see your bra through your shirt, a camisole isn't a bad idea. Wearing a camisole under something sheer will let your skin show through in the right places while keeping your more private parts hidden. Try a nude or light-colored camisole so it doesn't stand out and take the attention away from your shirt.

Modest Looks

A camisole also comes in handy when wearing a low-cut shirt that shows off a little too much cleavage. If your deep V-neck shirt is just a little too deep for your taste, throw on a camisole underneath. It'll give you just an extra bit of coverage so you're not displaying your business all over the place. This little fashion trick can easily turn a shirt with a daring neckline into something more workplace appropriate.

Camisole Options

If you're trying to draw attention away from your bust, wear a plain straight-front camisole without any frilly details. If you want to pull the eye to your chest, however, opt for a camisole with lace trim or a V-neck camisole. You also have the option of going braless with a camisole, if you don't need the extra layer. Some camisoles even come with built-in bra support, so they're kind of like hybrid bra-camisole combos.

Underwear as Outerwear

Traditionally, camisoles are considered underwear, but you can wear them sans shirt if you do it the right way. Obviously, a see-through camisole pushes the risque envelope, but camisoles that look like tank tops can absolutely be worn as outerwear when paired with a structured jacket or a cardigan. Super-girly satin camisoles with lace details can also add a light, feminine touch to more masculine looks like military-style pants and denim jackets.
