Nothing draws an outfit together like a sharp, well-tailored blazer. And wearing one in a delicious shade of burgundy will add some color to your outfit and set you apart from all of the grey and black jacket-wearing ladies of the world. However, if a richly colored blazer is a garment that is new to you, you might be at a loss on how to wear it. Don't be! There are so many different ways to wear one that once you know how to do it, you'll be pulling looks together from your closet that you didn't know existed.

1.

Make sure your blazer fits you properly. When shopping for one, try it on -- the shoulder seams should hit just at the outside tip of your shoulders and the front should close comfortably without any gaps. If you find a style you like but the sleeves are too long or the waist is slightly big, you can always have a tailor alter it to fit.

2.

Embrace color when choosing the rest of your outfit. Just because burgundy is in the red family, it doesn't mean you need to wear it with black. Shades of green are fantastic with burgundy (just look at Fergie). Yellow is also a cheerful and unexpected color choice. If bright hues aren't your thing, consider navy blue.

3.

Soften up. A burgundy blazer can look somewhat professorial if teamed up with tailored trousers, so balance out your ensemble with a ruffled blouse, or wear the jacket with a floaty dress. You'll take that blazer from formal and preppy to feminine and fun.

4.

Go casual and do it with denim. Wearing jeans with your blazer adds a different texture to your wardrobe mix and gives it hip, downtown cred. Coupling it with a pair of dark indigo skinnies is perfect for a gallery opening, while opting for a washed-out, wide-legged pair recalls the most fashionable women of the 1970s.

5.

Pick footwear in a neutral color to anchor your completed look. A burgundy blazer on top and dark boots or shoes on the bottom can act almost as bookends to an wispy frock or rad pair of designer denims. Think chocolate-brown slouchy boots with jeans or black platform pumps and tights with a mini dress.
