It's hard to imagine New York City without thinking about Broadway musicals! Going to the theater is one of the best things about the city that never sleeps, so of course you want to look and feel amazing in your clothes. New York City has some pretty cold winters, so it's important to take the weather into consideration. You can easily dress up a sweater and pant combo to look more elegant, or you could glam up your look with a slinky dress and leggings.
Classic Chic
A dress is always appropriate for a Broadway play but make sure to line your legs with thick tights or leggings so that they don't freeze in the cold weather. Black is the best color legging to wear because it won't detract from the rest of your outfit and will help elongate and slim the legs. Matinee shows are certainly more casual, so pairing ballet flats with a dress or skirt is not at all uncommon. Save your heels for an evening performance.
Jeans and Sweater
Jeans and a cardigan sweater is a clean and comfortable outfit for a night at the theater. If you do opt for jean pants, stick to darker washes as they look fancier and less casual. Avoid light washed jeans and destroyed denim styles for the theater, especially during evening performances. Dark blue or black skinny jeans are slimming and flattering on most body shapes. For an extra boost of glamour, wear a pair of heels and tote your favorite handbag.
Jackets and Boots
Since New York winters can be pretty rough, you might want to consider wearing boots. Skip rain boots and opt instead for a knee-high or ankle leather boot. The fabric looks more expensive and unless there is snow on the ground, these shoes will be strong enough for any gust of wind. Wool coats are a must for outerwear in New York. You will be taking off your heavy coat inside the theatre, so just layer a tailored blazer or cropped jacket underneath.
Accessories
Accessories should be your middle name when you visit New York. Fashionistas are always showing off the latest trends so why shouldn't you? Belts cinched at the waist are flattering to the female form and will showcase a small waist and hip area. Use jewelry to make an artistic statement to express your personality. A night at the theatre is the perfect time to wear that trendy necklace you just bought on Canal Street or the chandelier earrings you've been dying to wear.
