What to Wear to an Afternoon Tea

Traditional tea-time fashion is no longer your only option

When it's time to head to afternoon tea, only the finest attire will do, dahling. Flourishing skirts, peep-toe pumps and sweater sets are all optimal fashion choices while you stick your pinky out and sip tea. That's if you want to stick with something traditional. Fly in the face of all of that with a more funky twist on afternoon tea attire like flowing peasant blouses, sexy pencil skirts and tank-style blouses, in bright hues or eclectic patterns. The key to pulling off contemporary tea-time fashion is an outfit that is at once feminine and flirty.

Full-Skirted Dress

If you trend towards the traditional, then a full-skirted dress is the perfect look for your afternoon tea venture. Combining the style with a pair of kitten heels and colorful beaded jewelry or a set of pearls puts you right on par with the high-society types that stop for an afternoon of tea and cookies. If you really want to go all out, wear a wide-brimmed hat to complete the look.

Fitted Button-Down Shirt and Pencil Skirt

Perhaps you like your tea like the ladies from "Sex and the City" -- with a twist of something a little extra. Your attire should be equally . . . extra. A sexy black pencil skirt that shows off your curves and a fitted, white button-down top paired with a super sassy pair of red stilettos says more "Long Island Iced Tea for me, please," instead of the traditional stuff in your grandmother's fine china teacups.

Denim Skirt and Peasant Blouse

Perhaps you want to be more serene and demure for tea-time style. Accomplish this and be comfortable in an ankle-length denim skirt with a peasant blouse and a simple low ponytail. Flat sandals and simple gold or silver jewelry brings the look together. If you need a flash of pizazz, tie a colorful scarf around your neck and let the excess hang around your neck and down the front of your blouse.

Cotton Dress

If you are just coming from the office or want a professional look for tea time, then a simple cotton shift may do the trick. A solid hue and a funky belt wrapped around your waist adds a chic element, while high-heeled pumps and a statement necklace make the look a bit more sophisticated. Add a cropped jacket with the dress if you want another layer, or leave it as is.
