Paddle brushes are large, flat brushes used for creating sleek, straight hairstyles. Because of their extra-large width, paddle brushes work great in longer, thicker hair types. Paddle brushes are often used to brush the hair straight to remove volume and straighten the hair while reducing frizz. Paddle brushes also add a sexy shine to your lengthy locks. Although it works terrific for long, thick styles, a paddle brush can be used on any type of hair.

Brushing Dry Hair

To brush your long, thick hair, place the paddle brush underneath your hair's roots. Gently lift your locks at the root and run the brush down the shaft of your hair until all of your hair has been brushed. Because the width and flatness of the paddle brush works best at removing volume, lifting the roots will avoid a helmet hair look.

Removing Tangles

To remove tangles in dry hair, make small, short strokes at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots to minimize breaking off any of your long, thick strands. For large snags, use a wide-tooth comb to gently separate the hair, then use the paddle brush to brush your hair as normal. Never use a paddle brush on wet hair or you risk damaging your hair. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to work out any tangles and comb through your hair.

Calming Flyaways

The paddle brush design is intended to remove frizz and volume to create sleek and shiny hairstyles. After completing the paddle brush technique, it is normal to experience a few flyaways or out-of-place strands. Work these pieces into place with the paddle brush by making short, gentle downward strokes. For excessive flyaways, spritz on a light hairspray before brushing them into place.

Blow-Drying Straight Styles

Paddle brushes are coupled with blow-drying to create a sexy, straight style. Thicker, longer styles have the added benefit of weight to pull the hair down. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your wet hair and allow it to air-dry until it is only slightly damp. Appy a heat-protective spray or serum, avoiding the root area, and comb through. Lift your hair at the roots and apply a medium heat by holding the blow-dryer straight down, at least 6 inches from the hair strand. Slowly brush down your hair shaft, moving the blow-dryer down with each stroke. Continue until all of your hair is dried into a straight style.
