How to Watch Fashion Trends

Overview

Fashion trends change at a speed that is slightly less than that of light. You have to keep your eyes peeled to stay on top of the game. But when it comes to dressing and managing your wardrobe, looking at trends is the fun, inexpensive and essential to creating your own personal style. There is no wrong or right way to dress. Seeing what others are putting together can help you decide what you like and what you don't.

1.

Take a trip to the drug store and pick up the most recent issues of fashion magazines. Looking through the latest issue of Elle or Vogue is more than seeing photos of models in designer outfits. Read the articles! Learn about the makeup hitting the runways and the looks of the most current season. This is where it all starts. What those magazines put in their pages, women put on their form. It's what stores imitate less expensively for the masses.

2.

Grab a celebrity rag or two. Fashion magazines give you the unabridged version of the top of the fashion food chain. Celebrities are a more approachable way to see what's happening. The way they dress for the red carpet is imitated and re-created in local stores in almost every town. Cover all your bases and make sure you're looking at People or US Weekly, too.

3.

Hop online. Fashion bloggers all over the world are taking pictures of street style in cities like Amsterdam, New York and Paris. This is where you can see how real people are interpreting current trends. If you like fashion, the effect is nothing less than inspiring. Try the Sartorialist, Garance Dore or Jak And Jil.

4.

Peruse trendy stores. Certain stores have a style they adhere to, almost regardless of trends, but others are right on top of it. Department stores carry a bigger variety of trendier clothing. Stores such as Forever21 strive to offer a huge variety of looks adapted from wearable trends in current seasons. Keep it simple, though. You don't want to walk out with a pile of clothes that make you look like a fashion victim.

5.

Take a walk through your local area. After you've seen what the designers have created in magazines, and what the most stylish people in the most stylish cities are wearing, it's time for you to head out and see what's in your area. Maybe you'll see a toned-down or amped-up version of something you've been thinking about trying. Let your true colors shine and wear what makes you feel confident and beautiful.

Tips & Tricks

The most important thing in following trends is choosing what you want to wear and incorporating it into your wardrobe, so don't be afraid to mix and match. Save those tags and receipts if you get home and something doesn't work.
