How to Use Gel With Long Hair

Keep your long hair in place with the use of hair gel.

There's something about hair gel that makes it the perfect addition to any girl's beauty arsenal. Long-haired gals, especially, may find gel especially helpful in their quest hair to keep waves and curls in place. To get the perfect look for everyday hangin', a day at the office or a night at the town, go ahead and scrunch your hair using gel. Just don't forget to use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove old products from your mane. Now, your hair can brave even the strongest winds!

Wearing Your Hair Down


Get rid of gunk in your hair by washing it with a clarifying shampoo to remove all traces of past gels and hairsprays. This will ensure your hair comes out its best later. Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner to put moisture back into your locks.


Detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb to get knots out for a smooth look. Run the comb from your roots to tips to ensure your hair is ready for styling.


Rub a moderate amount of gel into your hands, flip your wet hair over and scrunch the gel into your hair from root to tip using your fingers. This will help preserve any waves in your hair (even if you have straight hair) and will also define curls if you have 'em!


Flip your hair right-side-up and tousle your hair until it's styled as you like it.You can let your hair air dry or use a blow dryer with a diffusing attachment to set your curls and waves. Now you've gotten waves that rival any beach or curls that can't be stopped!

Wearing Your Hair Up


Repeat Steps 1 and 2 above, this time brushing your hair back around the edges using a bristle brush. This will get all of your strands in place as you create your up-do.


Rub a small amount of gel between your hands. Apply it to the edges of your hair, then move your hands to the middle of your head, distributing gel throughout.


Flip your hair over and brush the hair from the nape of your neck upwards. Grab your hair in the middle as if you are creating a ponytail.


Turn your head right-side-up and brush your hair from the front and sides of your head to the ponytail you are holding.


Secure the hair your have gathered and brushed with a ponytail holder. Now, you can style your long hair as you'd like. A high bun works great with long hair, as you have enough to create a stylish and chic bun. Or, you can let your ponytail cascade down your back for a sexy and fun look. Blow dry your hair for a more polished look, or let it air dry for a more natural style.
