If you're tired of the red henna hair look, dyeing over it with a new color is not that simple. Henna alters the structure of your hair follicles so they resist dye penetration. While this makes hair color tricky, you can finesse a workaround that gets you a style break without breaking the bank for corrective coloring in a salon. It will take a few hours, but you can bid the henna goodbye and get on with your life post-redhead.

1.

Visit a stylist for help removing the henna from your hair. Unless you remove the henna, the demi-permanent color won't take to your mane. If you can't afford a stylist, soak the hair strands with 70 percent alcohol, applying it with a cotton ball. Let the alcohol penetrate for up to 10 minutes, then coat your locks with mineral oil, combing the oil through. Put a shower cap on your head and let the oil sit for half an hour while you heat your head with a hair dryer. Blow dry your mane for the whole half hour. Finally, apply clarifying shampoo to your oily locks, soaping up your hair thoroughly. Rinse out the shampoo and follow up with conditioner to remove much of the henna yourself.

2.

Read over the instructions on your demi-permanent dye kit so you know how long to process the dye.

3.

Mix the dye and developer as directed and pour it into an applicator bottle or a plastic bowl. Put latex gloves on your hands.

4.

Coat your tresses with the demi-permanent dye, applying it with the bottle or with the applicator brush.

5.

Place a shower cap on your mane to prevent the dye from dribbling down. Set a timer and leave the dye in for the recommended time.

6.

Rinse out the dye in the shower, rinsing until the water runs clear.

7.

Shampoo your locks with a gentle shampoo for color treated hair.

8.

Condition your hair with a rich conditioner for color treated hair.
