Make coarse black hair be shiny and smooth, not dry and dull, with an all-natural product. Softer hair is less prone to frizzing and flyaways, making your 'do more manageable. Coconut oil softens and conditions for hair health. It provides the same benefits for relaxed and natural hair, so sisters with all styles of coarse hair can enjoy this healthy hair oil.

Coconut oil penetrates hair strands to moisturize coarse hair. Coarse black hair produces less sebum -- natural hair oil -- than other types of hair. Since it's naturally drier, black hair needs higher doses of moisture. Without moisture, hair is prone to breakage and a flat appearance.

At-Home Treatments

When applied after you condition hair with leave-in conditioner or in the shower, coconut oil seals in the moisture from your conditioner. This gives hair a double dose of needed hydration. Massage a dime-sized amount of coconut oil into short tresses, and a quarter-sized amount into long locks. When coarse hair needs extra help, try a coconut hot oil treatment. Heat coconut oil until it feels warm to the skin. Massage the oil into hair, then cover hair with a shower cap or a warm towel. Let the oil penetrate up to one hour. Rinse the oil out in the shower, using shampoo.

Coconut oil shampoos and conditioners let you incorporate more moisture into your day with less effort. They're perfect for girls on the go. Find these at your local beauty supply store, and pick up coconut oil in the natural foods store. You also can turn any shampoo or conditioner into a coconut oil product by pouring a few tablespoons of oil into your bottle. You'll get the same moisturizing benefits as you wash.

Coconut oil helps prevent breakage by softening coarse hair. While you may end up with longer locks as a result, the oil doesn't actually promote hair growth. To get the best results from your coconut oil treatments, maintain a healthy hair routine. Avoid stressors, such as blow drying or flat ironing your hair with high heat, dyeing or relaxing hair. If you do perform these tasks, perform a weekly coconut hot oil treatment to help hair heal.
