Alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA, is a common skincare product that is used to fight pimples. You can buy it in a variety of facial cleaners and lotions in the skincare aisle in most grocery stores or drugstores, and your doctor may even prescribe it for you in a lotion or cleaner. Be aware that AHA lotions, often also called glycolic acid, come in varying concentrations. Using an AHA lotion with 10 percent concentration can be particularly effective in treating zits, but you have to know how to use it to avoid redness or irritation.
Wash your skin with a gentle acne cleanser. Pat dry with a soft towel.
Dab a small amount of the AHA lotion onto your skin and gently spread over your face. You may want to try this at night the first time so that any redness or irritation has time to go away.
Use a small amount of the AHA lotion for a few days at first, then slowly increase the amount of AHA lotion used to allow your skin time to adjust.
Dot a small amount of the AHA lotion directly onto pimples at night for a more concentrated treatment.
AHA can make skin more sensitive to the sun, so use sunscreen liberally.
If extreme redness or irritation occurs, stop using the AHA lotion and consult your doctor -- you may be having an allergic reaction.
