Breaking the rules isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it can be a blast. If you feel like spicing things up, try a makeup shade that you wouldn't normally wear. Don't worry about looking like a circus clown. There are plenty of ways to work in creative colors and ideas that make you look totally fashion-forward.

Colored Eyeliner

Instead of keeping your eyeliner a neutral black, charcoal or brown, add some color. Bright liner is a cool way to make your eyes pop and bring out your natural eye color. Tons of shades work here. Try bright blues, greens and purples. If you want to really make a statement, bolder shades like yellow swept across the top eye line are super trendy. "InStyle" magazine loves this look, which became popular for Spring 2011.

Purple Lipstick

Purple lipstick sounds scary, but it only is if you take the trend too literally. There's no reason to smear a bright, shocking purple on your lips. Instead try plums or purple shades with pink hues. If you're darker skinned, darker shades work for you. Lighter-skinned ladies should stick to lighter shades. And, because you're wearing such a bold color, keep the rest of you makeup neutral.

Unnaturally Chic Nails

Natural, more conventional nail polish colors like pinks and reds are always fab, but if you want to make your nails really interesting, slick on an unexpected shade. The beauty experts at "Glamour" magazine highly recommend it. Don't be scared to go bold. Step firmly into the 2010s with more daring shades on your nails, from navy blue to bright oranges and yellows.

Colorful Smoky Eye

Smoky eyes are generally achieved using blacks and browns. Make your peepers really stand out by doing your next smoky eye in a teal, plum or emerald. You do this the same as you would do a regular smoky eye. Just apply your darker shade on the lids and a lighter shade on the top creases of the eye and then blend. You'll want to blend so your color goes gradually from darker to lighter. Top it off with eyeliner and lots of mascara.
