The Best Type of Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

Liquid liner can look retro and hip -- but use a good waterproof formula to prevent smudges.

Waterproof eyeliner can be a lifesaver. Even if chances are slim that you'll end up getting soaked in a thunderstorm, wearing waterproof eyeliner is extra assurance that your eye makeup will survive any situation -- whether its humidity or a late night out dancing. But not all eyeliners claiming to be waterproof will really stand up to the splash test -- so know the best brands before shopping.

GHRI's Chose Wet n Wild

Good Housekeeping Research Institute chose the seven best waterproof eyeliners, and Wet n Wild H2O Proof Liquid Eye Liner was the winner in the "Long-Lasting" category. The affordable brand earned high scores from testers for the way it defined eyes and stayed in place all day. This eyeliner comes in a small bottle with a firm brush attached to the cap, which makes it easy to apply.

e.l.f. Wins Praise

Beauty editors at "Essence" say the Waterproof Eyeliner Pen by the bargain brand, e.l.f., which stands for "eyes, lips, face," rivals more expensive department store brands. The eyeliner, in plum, was also chosen by the Latina magazine "Mujer" as a winner in its 2010 beauty awards. This eyeliner is a liquid formula that's dispensed in a pen. If you don't have a steady hand, you'll love grasping the pen's long handle to apply the eyeliner, which will feel like you're writing with a marker. The formula is designed to not smudge or budge for hours, according to e.l.f.'s website.

Stila is M.V.P.

"Redbook" chose 2011's "Most Valuable Beauty Products" and the Best Eyeliner was Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. It comes in a pen with a super-fine tip for easy application, as well as a range of hot colors like teal.

A Clay Liner

"Emphaseyes" Clay Waterproof Liner Pot in Bronze by Tarte Cosmetics is recommended by "Cosmopolitan" as part of its "sexy makeup looks for fall" feature. The liner is infused with micronized clay, so it is a deep, highly pigmented color. Its staying power is further reinforced by a natural waterproofing agent, according to Tarte's website. Since it is packaged in a pot, it comes with a brush to make application easy. "Cosmo" suggests using this liner as a shadow on your eyelids, and then using it to line the base of your lashes to define your eyes. Use a black liner as well for even more definition.
