Cargo pants originally were designed to be utilitarian. They had large pockets for stowing items, were baggy for comfort and were typically a camouflage color to help military soldiers hide from enemies. Modern cargo pants are more about fashion than function. They have a skinny silhouette, which means the pockets are not meant to carry large or heavy items. They are solid colors with the intention of being more flattering. But best of all, modern cargo pants were created without a specific pair of shoes in mind. Your footwear options are endless.
High Heels
High heels and cargo pants are the definition of edgy style. Megan Finnerty's article on AZCentral.com has established some ground rules for wearing high heels with cargo pants. The first rule is that the pants must have a slim silhouette. The second rule is that the pants cannot be made of denim or canvas; only nylon, microfiber or polyester are acceptable materials to be paired with heels. Finally, the rest of the outfit must be kept very simple. Loud tops will make the outfit seem too busy.
Lace-Up Boots
Celebrities aren't going predictable by wearing camouflage cargo pants and black lace-up army boots. Instead, celebrities are wearing solid-colored cargos in neutral hues with uniquely-colored boots. "Mail Online" published a photo of Jessica Alba in stone-colored cargo pants with maroon-colored lace-up boots.
Flip-Flops
Stefan Campbell, the creative director of the television show "The Fashion Show Ultimate Collection," asserts that a fashionable outfit doesn't always require a lot of prep time. He claims that cargo pants, a tank top and flip-flops would be completely appropriate for a day of shopping in the Soho neighborhood in New York City. Of course, the outfit is just as fitting in Hollywood. "Teen Vogue" has a photograph of Vanessa Hudgens sporting a tank top, sunglasses, cargo pants and flip-flops.
Flats
To modernize a simple oxford shirt, pair it with flats and cargo pants, suggests "Redbook" magazine. This look is made for casual Fridays because it is conservative while still being interesting. Of course, if you are just running errands, you can always opt for flats, cargo pants and a cozy long-sleeve shirt without a collar.
