The Tuxedo Look for Women

Overview

Fashion-savvy gals know that a tuxedo is not just for James Bond wanna be's. Rocking the black-and-white formal wear is a great way to stand out amid a sea of traditional girly attire. The trick to pulling off the look? Make sure you keep it feminine and flattering.

This Is Not Your Boyfriend's Tuxedo

Don't try to get away with wearing a tuxedo like a man. Without altering it to accent your womanly curves, you can easily be mistaken for the valet. A nipped-in waist and fitted jacket will go long way in creating a more feminine package. Many designers make tuxedos tailored specifically for a woman's figure. You can also add a bit of drama by unbuttoning the pleated shirt down to there -- or forgo a shirt altogether and use the jacket as a peek-a-boo cover for a sexy, ruffled bra top.

Choose a Style That Best Suits You

If you're worried about options, don't be. There are many different styles of tuxedo to choose from. The jacket can be single- or double-breasted with notched or shawl-collar (rounded-style) lapels. The traditional tux trouser has a satin stripe down the outside of each leg, but pinstriped is another popular option. Vests come in both open- and closed-back styles, or you can skip it altogether and choose a cummerbund. And please, don't forget about color. Tuxedos are available in a rainbow assortment of hues.

Tuxedo a la Carte

If you're not keen on wearing a full-on penguin suit you can always pick and choose elements of the look that appeal to you. A tuxedo jacket over a micro-mini dress or a backless satin waistcoat vest paired with Palazzo pants are sexy styles that pay homage to the original. From cummerbunds to bow ties, there are many cool elements to play around with when you start to deconstruct the tux.

Accessorize It Right

The right jewelry and accessories will go a long way in giving your tuxedo look a feminine edge. For a formal event, rhinestone, cubic zirconia or diamond earrings and bracelets will add a glitzy sheen to your ensemble. A tiny, beady clutch or satin bag is a must. And don't forget about the shoes -- this is no time for blah -- electrify the look with red sequined pumps or a pair of strappy 5-inch heels. Congratulations, if you've decided to go this chic and trendy route. Just remember, if you opt for a traditional masculine style like the tuxedo, you've got to own it.
