Turning a Turtleneck Into a Mock Turtleneck

You don't even need a sewing machine to transform your turtleneck.

Repurposing old clothes is a clever way to get a new look without spending loads of dough. That said, if you've grown tired of the high neck on your trusty turtleneck, don't throw it out. Instead, transform it into a nifty mock turtleneck -- a top with a fitted neck that isn't tall enough to fold over. This once-ignored top has a new air of geek-coolness thanks to late Apple Founder Steve Job's penchant for wearing them. Snagging this look won't break the bank, and as a bonus, you don't even need major sewing skills to complete the task.

1.

Put your turtleneck on and unfold the neck.

2.

Decide how tall you want the new collar to stand. New York costume designer Antonia Ford-Roberts suggests that a flattering mock turtleneck height is between 1.5 and 2 inches.

3.

Take the turtleneck off and lay it flat with the neck unfolded.

4.

Mark the new height all the way around the neck using a ruler and your fabric pencil.

5.

Fold the collar inside the neck, using the line you just marked as the fold line.

6.

Mark a second line all the way around the neck where the folded collar meets the inside seam of the collar of the shirt.

7.

Unfold the neck and cut along this second line. You have now trimmed off the neck's excess fabric.

8.

Refold the collar inside the neck using the first line you marked as your fold line. The raw edge of the neck now matches up with the inside seam of the collar of the shirt.

9.

Stitch the raw edge to the seam of the collar of the shirt. The neck needs to stay stretchy, so leave a little give in each stitch and make sure they are the same size. Try not to sew all the way through the front of the turtleneck. You don't want your handiwork to be visible.
