Trina Turk's eponymous fashion label is all about indulging your California dreams, no matter how far you live from the beach. Fun prints mix with classic American sportswear for an effortlessly chic look. The fashionably fierce Trina Turk works a strong LA vibe into her designs, yet manages to appeal to women from coast to coast with casual, elegant clothes available at boutiques, department stores and online.
At the age when most girls are still giving misguided haircuts to Barbie, 11-year-old Trina Turk was learning how to sew from her mother. From that early age, she knew she wanted to be a clothing designer. She went on to the University of Washington, where she studied apparel design. Trina designed for a slew of companies in her early days including Britannia Jeans in Seattle and LA surf wear company Ocean Pacific. However,Trina wasn't going to be satisfied until she had her dream job designing a contemporary women's line. Like so many successful women before her, she struck out on her own.
In 1995, Trina partnered with her husband Jonathan Skow to form Trina Turk as a company in LA. Within a year, a dream roster of upscale department stores--including Barney's New York, Saks Fifth Avenue and Fred Segal--were carrying the line. In 2002, the first Trina Turk boutique, located in Palm Springs, California, opened its doors. Other boutiques have followed, including a boutique in New York's meatpacking district, bringing a bit of California's saltwater breeze to one of the city's hottest neighborhoods.
Trina Turk's women's line brings together a variety of influences. The clothing has a light, airy feel befitting its California origins, and the prints are playful and often drawn from vintage textiles. Overall, the look is of classic American sportswear, but with twists that draw on the beach culture, city landscape and multicultural personality of LA. The look pops with energy and relies on a superior fit; the clothes are eminently wearable and effortlessly chic. Each season's line is on trend, but the timeless appeal of the clothes means they'll still look great when the next season rolls around.
Building on the success of the original women's wear line, Trina Turk has expanded to include a men's line, women's and men's swimwear, accessories, jewelry and home decor. The jewelry line isn't for the timid. It's made up of statement pieces, with striking, large necklaces and bold cuffs in abundance. The accessories, including hats, belts, sunglasses and handbags, are so steeped in that southern California vibe that they could have come straight from the beach. In the home decor collection, called "Residential," Trina Turk's love affair with colorful prints finds a new outlet in the form of throw pillows, towels and other accessories for the home.
