1.
Lay the strip of eyelashes out along your natural lashes on your upper eyelid to get the perfect length and create realistic, full lashes, not a tacky Halloween costume look. Choose fake eyelashes in natural, not overly long, lengths. After laying them along your eyelash line, cut the fake lash strip to the appropriate width. Cut from the inner corner since this area holds the shortest lashes.
2.
Dab the eyelash glue on the back of your hand and apply to the fake eyelashes with a toothpick. Never apply directly to your eyelid or you may soon find your eyelids glued together. Wait for the glue to dry to a tacky substance before applying the eyelashes. For self-adhesive eyelashes, skip the gluing step and apply directly to your eyelid. If your eyelashes come in a band, apply a dark eyeliner to the eye so the band blends in.
3.
Hold a small mirror just below your chin and look down in to it while laying the lashes along the eyelid to apply lashes in the right spot -- that's a tip offered by Jim Crawford in "The Handbook of Style." Press into the inner and outer corners for a snug fit that will hold all day.
4.
Give your fake lashes two to three minutes to dry and latch on. Tug gently to ensure a snug fit, then curl both fake and real lashes. Apply mascara, eyeshadow and eyeliner as desired. A touch of eyeliner will hide the base of the fake eyelashes. Make sure to catch both your real and fake lashes when applying mascara.
5.
Don't yank off your fake eyelashes unless you want to feel a sharp sting and take a few real eyelashes with them. Apply fake eyelash remover along the band or edge and wait for it to start working. After two to three minutes the eyelashes should slide off with little effort on your part. It'll prevent damage to your skin and feel much better.
