They're no hard and fast rules stating that ponytails have to be sleek and smooth, so don't be afraid to get playful with the updo. Flirty, tousled ponytails are ideal for warm-weather outings, such as picnics with friends or lazy days at the beach. Not only will the hairstyle sweep your long locks off of your neck, it'll give you a casually elegant look without too much time and effort.

A tousled ponytail is ideal for a Friday night date after a long day at work because the hairdo works best on slightly messy, textured hair. If you're creating the look with freshly washed hair, spray a bit of hair texturizer onto your tresses and work it through with your fingers. Scrunch the ends of your hair with your hands to create waves.

Use a bristle brush to comb the top of your hair as you gather the bottom portion into a ponytail. Secure the ponytail at the midpoint of your head with an elastic band.

This is one hairdo that looks better a bit messier than polished. Spritz a little more texturizer into your ponytail and tousle your hair with your fingers to create a windswept, beachy look.
