Fashion trends come and go. While that strappy, slip of a top may look mighty cute on the hanger, what about on you? The key to dressing slimmer is all about understanding your body. You can look lean, slim and stylish, while being comfortable too. It's all about camouflaging the lumpy bits and showing off all of that good stuff.
Dress to Your Size
Ever hide yourself under baggy clothing when you're feeling self-conscious? Big mistake, as is wearing super tight clothes. They expose your excess pounds, so avoid clinging fabrics like Lycra and silk (unless you are enviously toned). If you want to look slimmer, the first step is wearing your size. "The best way for a girl to really look slim is to define her shape in the most flattering places, not obscure it!" Tracey Lomrantz explains to "Glamour."
Consider Your Length
The length of the sleeves and hem can make or break your slimming top: cover up the bits you would rather not share. So, if you have have bigger arms, wear a top with sleeves. Choose flared, bell, slit, three-quarter, cap...the more volume, the thinner the rest of your arms look. Keep your hem long. Let it sit somewhere between your stomach and hips. This will not only hide any bulges, but also elongate your torso.
Draw attention away from the not-so-great to the wow your mama gave you! Streamline your silhouette with a wrap top, "Nipping in at the waist, they create an hourglass silhouette," Jacqui Stafford, "Shape" Fashion Editor explains. Every woman's decolletage is gorgeous, so choose V or scoop necks to highlight yours. An off-the-shoulder top will show off great shoulders, while turtlenecks are elegant on slender arms.
Create an Optical Illusion
The first rule of Slimming Fashion 101 is wearing dark colors. They seemingly knock off visual pounds. Then you need to know your patterns. Image Consultant Michelle T. Sterling of the Global Image Group advises, "Vertical lines generally make you look taller and slimmer and avoid floral patterns which tend to make you look larger." Smaller patterns such as animal print not only look chic, but the optical illusion can trim your torso.
Spanx and Slimming Panels
There's nothing wrong with cheating occasionally. So, try a slimming top that will smooth out your imperfections and take off a few inches too. There is, of course, the corset for a vintage look. Alternatively, choose from a growing array of tops with integrated shapewear.
Play with accessories and texture to direct attention away from your stomach, such as placing statement jewelry around your face. Power dress with shoulder pads; they will broaden your shoulders and balance out your hips.
