Just a few years ago Saturday Night Live was making fun of high-waisted jeans in their "Mom Jeans" sketch. However, now this 1970s trend is back with a vengeance, and everyone from Jessica Simpson to Rihanna is wearing them. The key to wearing these pants is pairing them with the right top -- this is what keeps your whole outfit from looking too soccer-mom-esque.
A fitted top tucked into a pair of high-waisted jeans looks put-together and elegant. Try wearing a shirt that's tight around your torso and has more billowy sleeves. This looks especially awesome if your jeans have wider legs -- the contrast between the tight top and big jeans will make your waist look tiny. While a solid-colored top looks more elegant, try wearing a vintage tee for an edgy rocker look.
If you've got a tight tummy, show it off a little in a crop top. While cropped shirts and sweaters look sleazy with low-riding pants, they actually look really nice with high-waisted jeans. Since you only see a peek of skin when you move around, it's sexy without being tacky.
Try pairing your high-waisted jeans with a button-up blouse for a more professional look. Either button the shirt all the way up and wear it to a business-casual day at the office, or leave a few of the top buttons undone for a real sexy '70s look. Don't forget to tuck in your shirt to show off the tiny little waist those jeans give you.
Wearing a breezy, drapey top with your tight high-waisted jeans is a great combination for the warmer weather. Either tuck the top in and let it billow out from your jeans or keep your top cropped. This combination makes your legs look like they go on forever, so it's a flattering look for short-legged ladies.
High-waisted jeans look polished when you pair them with some type of jacket over your shirt. Try wearing a double-breasted jacket or a blazer. This adds some instant class to your outfit and makes it perfect for work or a casual business dinner. A jacket will also emphasize the high waist of your jeans, so if you want to show them off pairing them with a little blazer's an easy way to do it.
