How Tight Should a Pencil Skirt Be?

A pencil skirt should fit snugly in all the right places.

Even though a pencil skirt is slimming and figure-flattering, it is still a common skirt worn for professional events, such as interviews, conferences or even just a day at work. It’s a head-turning skirt with a jacket or a tucked-in button-down blouse. But when you’re wearing a pencil skirt for a semi-formal or formal affair it can’t be so tight that you can barely move.

Marvels of the Pencil Skirt

A pencil skirt is a wardrobe necessity for any fashionable lady — similar to the little black dress. You can wear it to both casual events and formal affairs depending on how you put the rest of your outfit together. For instance, if you’re going to a party you could pair it with a corset top and heels for a sexy outfit. You can take the same skirt and put on a turtleneck for a quick work outfit.

The Pencil Skirt Fit

A pencil skirt is designed with a slim fit from the waist right down to the knees. It molds your body into an hourglass figure and acts as a girdle for your stomach and buttocks. A properly fitting pencil skirt is extra snug around the stomach area then just a bit more loose around the hips, buttocks and thighs. It’s naturally meant to be snug around your curves, but snug is different from too tight.

Clues That It’s Too Tight

One clue that the pencil skirt is too tight is if you have a hard time walking naturally. You should be able to stride just as you would if you were wearing a pair of pants. Another clue is if you look like a mermaid when you try to sit down — you should be able to comfortably bend down to take a seat. Another clue that the skirt is ill-fitting is if the back bottom of the skirt is higher than the front. If you have shapely buttocks it tends to pull the back up. Find a pencil skirt that is specially made with more room in back for voluptuous body types.

The Shoes Matter

The shoes you wear with a pencil skirt change the way it looks on your body. For instance, when you wear a pair of high-heeled stilettos it lifts your calves and backside, which makes the pencil skirt outfit look a bit more risque and sexy. But for a more professional atmosphere, a pair of low pumps or kitty heels are more appropriate. So bottom line, save those stilettos for the after work happy hour.
