Ladies, finding the perfect bra is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Even trying to snag a simple style -- such as a great string bra -- can leave you feeling despondent. Garnering suggestions from friends and reading online reviews are great starting points, but finding the best string bra is more about finding the best string bra for you. This means not only knowing your size, but being honest about which clothes look best with this style, and whether this style is right for your body type.
String Bras: The Lowdown
This bra is about as basic as it gets. Much like a string bikini top, it consists of two triangular pieces of fabric that are connected at the center and tie around the neck and at the mid-back. There's no clasps or underwire on this baby, so you won't have the same kind of support as you would with a bra that sports those features. However, the tie neck does give your bosom a little lift and the lack of bells and whistles provides you with a more natural silhouette. You also won't encounter any of the pinching or squeezing that comes with an underwire bra.
Measurements
The biggest issue with string bras is that they're available in either one-size-fits-all, or in sizes small, medium and large. That doesn't mean you shouldn't know your measurements. Many stores and websites have a chart that shows the exact measurements that coincide with specific sizes. To find your bra size, wrap a measuring tape around your chest in the area just beneath your armpit and across the top of your chest. The number you get is your band size. If it's an odd number add 1 inch. Measure loosely across the largest part of your chest, then subtract the band size from this number. If the difference is 1 inch, then your cup size is "A." Increase a cup size for each additional inch.
The Best Fit
Ladies blessed with large bosoms need to find a string bra with cups that provide enough coverage. Women with thick torsos should opt for a string bra with ample ties that have a little stretch to them. The best string bras for those with small breasts have a little padding to give your bosom a boost. Small-breasted women also want to have cups that cover the breast, but aren't loose-fitting. The ties on string bras may rub against your skin, so ladies with a sensitive epidermis should find a string bra with ties made of material that doesn't irritate.
Best Fabrics
Unless you're wearing a high-necked, loose-fitting blouse, the ties on your string bra are going to be exposed. That said, opt to wear a string bra under T-shirts or tanks for casual occasions only. To wear one under fitted tops, try a string bra made of microfiber. This high-tech, synthetic material is known for its smoothness, so the outline of the cups is less likely to be visible under your shirt. For gals in hot climates, the best string bras are made of breathable fabrics such as mesh, or moisture wicking materials that keep you cool.
