The fashion runways are packed with models sporting pencil straight, silky hair. Achieve a fierce crown of glory by learning to properly straighten your coarse hair. Michigan-based cosmetologist Kathy Mojet says that coarse hair generally needs more moisture and higher heat during straightening. Get this balance down and you will be ready to hit the town with gleaming locks in no time.

1.

Wash and condition hair using moisturizing shampoo and conditioner designed to nourish your locks. Mojet says that regular shampoos are not formulated to handle the moisture needs of heat-styled, coarse hair.

2.

Slick thermal protector onto damp locks and brush through your hair to make sure it is evenly distributed. Thermal protector is activated by heat and works to keep precious moisture in your hair during blow drying and straightening. Unless you want your styling tools to turn your precious mane into something resembling bales of hay, you need product on your strands that act as a barrier between hair and heat.

3.

Blow dry your hair using a round hair brush, with your hair dryer pointed down toward your hair's ends. Lift hair up at the root for volume and pull the brush down in a firm motion. Your round brush will begin the process of straightening your hair so that the flat iron does not have as much work to do.

4.

Preheat a low-heat ceramic flat iron on high, since sturdy coarse hair needs higher heat than fine hair during straightening. If the heat is too low, Mojet warns you could end up drying out strands by ironing each section too many times. It is better to have a higher heat and minimize contact between the flat iron and hair.

5.

Position the flat iron near hair's roots and pull directly down in a strong motion. Mojet says women get the most glamorous and even results by ironing one- or two-inch sections at a time, rather than large chunks of hair.

6.

Rub one or two drops of finishing oil between your hands and slick over straightened locks in order to keep the frizzies at bay and give your hair sexy, polished appeal.

7.

Lightly spritz non-drying, alcohol-free hairspray onto your finished style in order to keep strands neatly in place. Let the hairspray dry thoroughly before heading out to rock your glam gal style and you'll be rewarded with hair that stays fabulously in place from breakfast burrito to night cap.
