How to Stop Split Ends for Hair to Grow

Help your hair stay strong so it will grow long.

Split ends are the enemy of long hair. Why? Because they can travel up your hair strand, making it break off. That means frizz, messy looking styles and hair that never grows past a certain length. Luckily, it's not so hard to stop split ends before they start doing any real damage. You can keep them in control without spending a lot of money or time on your hair. The key is to respect your hair for the amazing feature it is -- or will be.

1.

Inspect your hair carefully. Be honest: If the ends look frayed, you have splits.

2.

Trim the ends of your hair at least 1/4 inch, or as long as necessary to cut off split ends. Yes, it's hard to part with your length -- but once split ends start, the only way to stop breakage is to cut them off.

3.

Avoid washing your hair more than once or twice a week. When you do, shampoo only the roots, not the ends. Apply conditioner and let it soak in for two minutes before rinsing.

4.

Wrap your hair in a towel to dry, instead of rubbing. Avoid blow drying or heat styling while your hair is wet, as this can stretch the strands and break them.

5.

Wait to comb your hair until it's dry, if possible. Comb gently in 2-inch sections, using a wide-toothed comb or your fingers.

6.

Oil the ends of your hair with coconut or olive oil. Rub a little into your palms, then work it into the ends of your hair. Avoid putting it near the roots.

7.

Once a week, warm a few tablespoons of shea butter in a bowl in the microwave, and apply it all over your hair from scalp to roots. Let it soak in for 30 minutes before washing out.

8.

Tie your hair back gently with a ribbon or a gentle elastic. Avoid barrettes and clips that pull your hair tightly, but do pull your hair back off your face. Make sure you keep it away from backpack straps or other places it can get caught and break.
