Spring can be a tricky season. Rain and warming temps mixed with the slush of winter call for jackets on a lot of days. Even when the sun is shining, you might feel the need for an extra layer. Thankfully, the fashion world is well aware of the problem, and there are some classic options for you to step out in style.

Trench

It almost goes without saying that a trench needs to be in every fashion savvy girl's wardrobe. If you don't have one yet, pick one up in the staple color: khaki. Make sure the fabric is lightweight. If you can find one that's water resistant, all the better. Trench coats are available in a wide array of colors and price points. You should have a trench in a basic color at least. But, feel free to pick one up in a red, green or blue as a bright accent for those gray spring days. You'll be able to find an affordable trench at stores like Gap, H&M and Zara.

Denim

Denim jacket styles come and go. In the '80s, it was all about light, stone washed denim in a shapeless oversized cut. In the '90s, the denim jacket was more natural and fitted. In the new century, just about any type will do the trick, as long as it fits. Stick to a basic medium blue color with only a little bit of fading. A jacket that's fitted will go much further than one that's too trendy looking. They look great paired with your spring dresses, tights and boots.

Army

Make no mistake, the army trend is a modern classic. If you find a chic, lightweight coat in an army green color, pick it up. It'll go with everything from a nautical striped t-shirt to flower print tops and dresses. Choose one with a straw string at the waist to emphasize your midsection when you're all zipped up against the elements. Army-inspired jackets are all over the place, but if you want to be authentic, consider hitting up a vintage shop and having the jacket you find tailored.

School Boy

A school boy blazer is probably a lot more versatile than you think. It'll add quirky style to casual outfits and a conservative extra to more streamlined looks. You can't really go wrong with gold button details and a navy blue structured blazer. Wear a scarf on colder days and hit the spring streets in all your chic, androgynous, glory.
