Want the hold of gel without all the stickiness? Spray gel is an awesome alternative for curly hair. It'll give you the hold you crave but in a lighter, gentler way. Think of spray gel as the low-fat version of styling products.

Is It Good for Curls?

The short answer? Yes, spray gel and curly hair go together like tequila and limes. Spray gel does a multitude of wonderful things for your curly hair. Curly hair often has a mind of its own, and the key to a great curly-hair product is to find one that is strong enough to tame your curls but yet lets the curls form naturally and do their thing -- only better.

Fight the Frizz

Curly hair is prone to frizz and the dreaded "poofiness." A misting of spray gel on damp hair, followed by gentle drying or air drying, lets your curls form in a defined way, without becoming fly-away. When applying the spray gel, towel dry your hair thoroughly first, to remove most of the moisture. This ensures extra moisture doesn't dilute the spray gel, which is pretty light, so it can work its magic without fighting extra moisture. Make sure to hold the nozzle at least 4 inches away from your hair so it mists evenly on a large area of your hair instead of saturating a small area.

Scrunch Curls Into Wavy Hair

Spray gel is an awesome product to use when scrunching your hair to turn waves into full-blown curls. Apply the spray gel to your damp hair and flip your head upside down. Use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer and aim the heat of the blow dryer at sections of those luscious locks while grabbing and squeezing that section with the other hand. Repeat the squeeze, dry, squeeze, dry routing until your hair is 90 percent dry. You'll have scrunched some seriously fabulous curls into your hair.

Curls in Fine Hair

Spray gel is a life saver for fine, curly hair. Oftentimes, heavier gels are too darn much for fine hair and its lack of muscle. Cue the spray gel that will give your limp tresses the power to form some fab curls -- but its lightweight enough that you can create body to boot. The key is to keep the application of the spray gel to a minimum. If you want extra body, a little misting of a root booster on your roots, then the spray gel on the mid-shaft and ends will give you some big, sexy curls.
