Spiky Brush Faded Hairstyles

The faux hawk look requires drying with a brush and some styling products.

When you think of a spiky brush faded hairstyle, what comes to mind may depend on your own personal style. On the one hand there's the high-on-top sort, which resembles a punk style; on the other side there's the shorter, tighter, more military look. Whether you lean more toward skater or soldier, you can get that spiky look with the use of a brush, some heat and a bit of styling product.

The Faux Hawk

Certainly the more dramatic of the spiky hairstyles, the faux hawk consists of slightly longer hair on top -- though not too short -- with either shaved or shorter hair on the sides. The longer top hair is gathered in the middle and then allowed to stand up a bit, making for one big "spike" or "hawk" at the top of the head. This look has the advantage of being somewhat of a chameleon; when you don't want to rock the hawk, you can simply lay the top hair to one side. If you want a faded look for the sides, use an electric razor and shave the sides on a regular basis. Since you're working with the back of your head, you'll hopefully have a friend around to help.

How to Get It

To get the faux hawk look, you'll need a bit of styling gel or pomade and a round brush. Place a dollop of the gel or pomade in the palm of your hand and then rub your hands together. Rub both hands through all of the top hair. For a higher spike, put enough pomade into the hair to get it slightly wet-looking. Then take your brush and brush the top hair up toward the ceiling, using your other hand as a "wall" for the hair to brush up against, creating that "hawk" toward the front and top of the head.

The Blowout

The other spiky, faded hairstyle worth mentioning is the blowout, which includes shorter hair spiked out all over the head. Some people choose to include a small "fade" or shaved area on the very bottom of the hair, and sometimes around the sides as well. While the style became popular thanks to the men of the television series Jersey Shore, the relatively simple 'do can be achieved by women as well.

How to Get It

If you want to try the blowout spiky hairstyle, you'll need to start by blowdrying your hair while brushing it in an upward direction. Then place a dollop of pomade or "styling glue" into your hands and rub the hands together. Rub the pomade into the ends of the entire head of hair and follow the application with more brushing in the upward direction. You can use the blow dryer again here to continue blowing the hair upward. Once the style is set, add hairspray to keep the style in place. If you want to include a fade, use your electric razor and shave the bottom and sides often.
