Blackberries are a delicious, low-calorie fruit with myriad health benefits. In addition to their sweet taste, blackberries also have high anti-aging and anti-inflammatory qualities. Incorporate some blackberries, or blackberry extract, into your daily diet to reap the numerous benefits. Blackberry extract is available online or from most health food stores.
Blackberries contain a high amount of tannin, which is an astringent and an antiseptic. Historically, blackberries were used medicinally to treat and disinfect wounds. Tannin tightens tissues, which can improve the saggy appearance of skin. If applied topically, tannin also tightens and shrinks visible pores.
Blackberries and other dark-colored berries contain high amounts of antioxidants. These flavanoid-heavy antioxidants prevent the spread of free radicals in your body, making blackberries an excellent cancer preventative. Regular consumption of antioxidants helps cleanse the body and prevent visible signs of aging on the skin.
Although it may seem like a no-brainer at times, the majority of women simply do not drink their required amount of water daily. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for you skin, and blackberries have a high water content. If you tend to forget to drink your daily eight glasses, a handful of blackberries for breakfast or lunch helps your skin stay hydrated.
In addition to its antiseptic properties, blackberries also possess some anti-inflammatory properties. In the past, blackberries were used to control injury-based swelling. Consumption of blackberries or blackberry extract helps with puffy or swollen skin, especially the area around the eyes. If you have injury or stress-based swelling, the anti-inflammatory properties in blackberries helps as well.
